It was necessary for me to meet his wife, so I asked him to write a letter of recommendation. He accepted.
To my surprise, he asked for leave the next day and went back to his home one day ahead of me.
Yi Lanying was the only person that I had seen in those two weeks who was still wearing her army uniform. Was it because she had no other, more fashionable clothes, or was it because she wanted to wear it in honor of her past memories? Years of hardship had left traces at the corner of her eyes, but her face was radiant and ruddy, and she could not conceal her frequent smiles. Unlike the other women in the city, she was not accustomed to staring into people's eyes when talking, yet during our interview she was outspoken and quite brilliant.
"What was it about Wu that made you fall in love with him?"
"His honesty and loyalty."
"What about now?"
She thought about it for a few seconds and then answered sincerely, "I still love him for his honesty and his loyalty."
What an unexpected impression Wu had made! He had deceived his first wife, but his second wife thought him honest and loyal?
"During all these years, your husband has performed well at work, but he has also endured a lot. You have helped him greatly." I said.
"I had to take on his responsibilities; after all we are husband and wife and have to stick together through thick and thin. Even though we suffered a lot, we were both very happy and it's good to think that things will be better in the future."
She lowered her head and began to rub her hands. I noticed that she was wearing a wedding ring on her left hand.
"When did you buy this ring?"
She gave an embarrassed smile, "It's a cheap ring, I just wear it for fun. Last year when he came back on leave we went shopping and he bought it for me. He felt bad because there was no ring at our wedding so he bought it in compensation. It's just some frivolous thing." She laughed, heartfelt delight lighting up her face.
I entered their house, but Wu was ashamed to show me around and I have to admit that the house was poorly furnished, although it was clean and tidy. An unpainted combination sideboard stood in the parlor, in which was placed a tea set, a clay horse and a statue of the god of longevity. It was possible that Wu had made arrangements in preparation for my visit, but nevertheless, it appeared that the host and hostess greatly treasured their life together.
Jiaojiao, their youngest daughter, was a pretty girl with big eyes and red cheeks. Her mother told her to call me "uncle" , but she looked distrustfully at my face. When I extended my hands to hold her in my arms, she curled her lips and burst out crying.
This little girl, the result of an affair was unable to register herself as part of the family's Hukou because she was born in violation of the birth-control policy. Now, she seemed as if she was crying to complain about all of the burdens she carried, even as her parents simply laughed at her reaction.
I was deeply touched by their laughter. I felt delighted, it was as if a great weight had been lifted off my chest, yet this happiness was mingled with a deep sense of sorrow and bitterness. I was wondering if there was a certain connection between their character, their spirit and what I had felt on the working site with the needs of our nation and era.
I was told that initially, when they decided to demobilize the 400,000 railway engineering soldiers, many veterans went to their senior officials trying to pull strings to ensure their future. At last, one of the policy-makers remarked: "When the reform policy was planned, you were all willing to give your support, but now, when we have just begun to implement it, you come to me trying to dissuade me …"
If the reform is merely a new order, a theory discussed on paper or theoretically, then I believe everybody feels brave enough. But, when reform demands the destruction of the existing order to which we are emotionally attached, we begin to hesitate and would rather return to our old, secure and comforting ways. We are afraid of tragedy, and therefore can't envision an optimistic comedy.
Now I'd like to extend my heartfelt respect to another participant in this tragicomedy — the strong and tenacious Chinese woman who continued to live in her ex-husband's house, tilling the land for which she was responsible and raising her three children.
