"I wish I was, what I was, when I wished I was, what I am now…"

    My father had this quote attached to a file cabinet in his office. I remember reading it time and time again, wondering what it meant. One day I asked him to explain it to me. He said, "Well, when you become an adult, it means you will look back to the time when you were a child and go 'Wow, now that I am a teacher or a lawyer, I wish I were that child again and not the adult I am'."

    I'm not sure how old I was when my father and I had this conversation, but I remember thinking he was crazy. At the time, I couldn't wait to be a successful, contributing member of society, a real adult. Well, now that I am "almost" grown up, I can say that I never could have dreamed I'd end up where I am today.

    For most of us, life's path is rarely straight; it has many curves and hills and blind spots (no pun intended!), and yet, moving across life's unpredictable terrain is what makes us the individuals we are. This was not my original plan, nor could I have ever imagined it, but it's where my passions have taken me.

    Author M.H. McKee said, "Wisdom is knowing the right path to take and integrity is actually taking it." I believe our passions always lead us in the right direction. We all have an inner voice that tugs on our heartstring when we see something we feel is being neglected or needs attention. So listen to that voice. Don't let the noise from others' passions and opinions drown out your own. We all need to all be loud and proud about what we hope to accomplish without letting others drag us down.

    I want everyone to have opportunity. My personal inspiration has always come from the fact that we all put our pants on exactly the same way. Sure, maybe one person puts a little different spin on or unusual twist that the next person does not share, but the same basic principle still applies… one leg at a time. That's what motivates me on those days when I just want to stay in bed and pull the covers over my head. That's what gets my juices flowing—to know that every day I am going to cross paths with a person who can be a successful contributing member of society, if only given the opportunity.

    What gets your juices flowing? What excites, enriches and engages you? What drives you to achieve your goals?

    Goals will or will not be achieved according to how we, as individuals, are inspired. It is my hope that my stories helped you discover or reenergize your passion to make a difference. I challenge you to run towards whatever it is that inspires you. Run with passion and desire. And when you are nearing the finish line, reach back and grab someone who has not done as well and bring them across that finish line with you.
