    A shiny new pair of shoes, a hot cross bun, colorful eggs, the big furry white bunny, the resurrection, a basket full of candy…. What does Easter mean to you? Obviously, as we pass through different phases of life it means different things. As I am now 51 years old, which means I have completed several life phases, it is none of the above to me. Easter to me is more than something that is tangible. It represents Hope.

    Hope is a powerful thing. It gives way to a new beginning, a tomorrow, another chance, a do over. Hope can chase away despair and evil and bring light to the darkest of days. Hope can illuminate a path that had previously been obscured from view.

    Hope is a gift that God gives us time and time again, unconditionally. I realize many people think of this as superstition and not fact; however, for Christians, Christ's resurrection offers the greatest hope known to man. It doesn't matter what your church creed, your denomination, your philosophy or what color your church is painted, how many choir members you have or whether you sprinkle or dip. Without Christ, Christianity would be just another one of those dead religions, a religion made up by some mortal man, probably to stroke his ego.

    This next Easter, stop and take a look at the portrait Christ paints for us. It is a painting of renewed hope: the dismal landscape becomes brilliant with budding trees and flowers rising out of the cold hard ground. Spring is a celebration by all God's creatures—from the caterpillar that forms his cocoon and then becomes a beautiful butterfly to the large bear awakening from a long winter's nap. When I look around and see all the glory in Mother Nature, it is God saying, "Yes, I may be invisible to you, but look all around you. I created the birds in the air, the fish in the vast seas, and every animal that takes a breath." Nature alone should draw you to the hand of God. Christ's rising signifies new beginnings, hope, and a promising tomorrow.

    Easter also suggests forgiveness. There is so much hurt and sadness in our country, and forgiving others opens the door to many possibilities. It is a very hard thing for all of us to do, but it is such a powerful thing when we truly forgive. Forgiveness brings about unconditional love, real understanding, renewed trust, stronger relationships and provides that much needed hope.

    Isn't it interesting how when our lives are rocking and rolling along, we have no need for questions; but when our lives take a turn for the worse and things seem to spiral out of control, we then have no answers. We have no answers when innocent kids get killed for wearing the wrong thing, or someone gets ridiculed for his or her faith, or we lose our family and friends because of a mistake we made. So even if you're not someone who believes in Christ, it might help to try to emulate Him. Doing so just might provide many of the answers you are seeking! Christ's legacy is one we all could learn from. While none of us will ever be as perfect as He was, we can all still do a better job of following His lead.

    We can all try loving each other, forgiving each other, and offering hope to each other. What could be wrong with aspiring to do these things? I say, not a thing! Coming together with hope, love and forgiveness offers a fresh start; it helps us look around and see all that life has given us as opposed to all that has been taken from us. Best of all, it helps to enhance our relationships with our family, our friends and our neighbors.
